Is it finally time to take methane off the menu? π
Global meat production is driving climate change. We're serving up sustainability facts to set the record straight.
π Regardless of your ethical stance on animal welfare, there is one undeniable fact: meat production is a major driver of climate change.
Letβs break down why.
π± First of all, it's an inefficient use of both water and calories. Think about itβ¦ if you have to grow food to feed your food, most of the calories will be lost in sustaining living animals - 97% in the case of cows.
π©βπΎ In fact, meat production requires a quarter of the world's fresh water and almost 80% of farmland - and farmland takes up 26% of all land on earth!
π³ These figures are significant, especially when valuable carbon-storing forests are increasingly being cleared to accommodate more profitable farmland.
π And we still havenβt come to the biggest problem of all: methane. Farm animals - primarily cattle - produce a whopping 14.5% of global greenhouse gases.
